Jim, good question, and an idea that I also wondered about...

Yes, nearly all of our time was spent in urban Shanghai and Beijing, however while I have no factual data, we heard from students that we met there that the idea of oppression in the rural areas is almost completely false in terms of economics. Essentially they said that the Chinese government works pretty hard to distribute money evenly... so those in urban areas get the short end of the stick compared to how much of that money they generated.

Also, with China (and other parts of the world) you really have to decide what you will consider "rural"... 90% of China's population resides on 30% of China's land (<a href="http://www.iiasa.ac.at/Research/LUC/ChinaFood/data/pop/pop_11.htm" title="source" rel="nofollow">source</a>). Small towns in China often mean only a population of a few million people... like Phoenix.

Rick did you spend most of your time in the urban areas of China? I hear that most of the problems with poverty and lack of development lie in the rural areas of China which makes up approximately 90% of the Chinese population while the urban communities are the primary beneficiaries of China's rapidly growing economy.
