I love rivalry week…

Thanks to my uncle Dan in Chicago for hooking me up with this nugget of gold. I’m kind of confused as to why he had this, but I’m not going to go there.

Should be a good game today that could easily go either way. ASU is pretty overrated, and UofA looked like one of the top teams in the nation in their romping of UCLA. I guess we’ll see who comes out today.

Yesterday morning I refereed probably the most significant game of my 8 year career. (link to coverage) It was the male championship game of the Fiesta Bowl Soccer Tournament. It pitted a rematch of last year’s state championship game Mt. Pointe and Gilbert.

Just in case anyone thought they would be “that guy” to let me know that the Yank’s lost last night becoming the first team to ever lose a seven game series after going up 3-0, I thought I would share a few stats with you.
The Yankees were the first to do a few other things such as win 10 World Series Titles… by the way they were also the first AND ONLY team to win their 11th through 26th World Series Title. (FYI, the Cardinals are the next closest with 9… pesky Cardinals, the Yanks just can’t seem to shake em I guess. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Cardinals have been in existence for 19 years more than the Yanks)
The Yankees hold a 25% share of all the seats in the Hall of Fame. Let me break that down for everyone: 30MLB teams; NY Yankees 25%, rest divided equally (for sake of ease) 2.5%.
Yankee pitchers have thrown 3 perfect games (including Don Larsen in the ‘56 WS) plus 8 no hitters.
Yankees have hit for the cycle 14 times.
Yankees hold 7 of the 14 all time records kept by mlb.com.

If these are not enough to shut you up, try to remember that Jeter, ARod, Sheffield, Matsui, and Williams will ALL be back next season. Oh and for you Red Sox fans, guess who Pedro’s agent is meeting with on Monday November 1 (coincidentally the day after the potential WS game 7)… George Stienbrenner. Pedro has already said his daddy is the Yankees, soon he will be getting his allowance from them too.

The Az Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) soccer season is moving into the final month of games, and the playoffs are more or less already set. This fact is bad news for almost everyone involved; players know whether their games are worth while or not, coaches are either looking towards the post season or towards next season, and the referees are trying to pull one last good game to get into the post season pool or are going through the steps with no clear intent or effort.

Today I was an Assistant Referee(AR) on a good one… 8th place Mesa Community College vs 10th place (aka last place) South Mountain Community College. The game was, for lack of a better word, ugly…

What will be the big story at the Olympic Games in Athens? The sports or the security? Hopefully it will be the sports… and from there what will be the major sports story of the games? Hopefully it will not be a story about how the US B-Ball team was upset. Today I read three articles linked off of cnn.com about how the “Dream Team ‘04″ is prime to be upset, yet not a single one of the articles mentioned anything about a team that could do it, or who would be the favorite if the upset did happen. Us Americans are nay sayers and snooty.

The real story as far as I’m concerned will be tracking how close this medal prediction comes to reality. How the hell do you predict something like this? I mean just in the top ten medaling countries that amounts to 522 medals!!
